Election Commission’s Big Announcement: Second Phase of SIR to Begin in 12 States Today
Election Commission to Begin Second Phase of Voter List Overhaul in 12 States from Today: The Election Commission of India has announced the launch of the second phase of the Special Comprehensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Chief Election Commissioner Jnanesh Kumar stated that after the successful implementation of the first phase in Bihar, the second phase will now cover 12 states and union territories across the country. The initiative aims to include all eligible voters while removing ineligible or duplicate entries from the rolls.
Kumar highlighted that the SIR process is an important step toward ensuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral rolls. He noted that similar revisions have been conducted eight times between 1951 and 2004, but concerns over errors in voter lists have persisted. To address this, the Election Commission is deploying one Booth Level Officer (BLO) in each polling booth and one Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in each assembly constituency. Enumeration Forms (EF) for all voters will be printed today, and BLOs will visit every household at least three times to verify information.
The electoral rolls in the selected states will be frozen at midnight tonight, marking the start of the process. Voters residing outside their constituencies can also update their details online without submitting additional documents. The SIR exercise is especially significant as states like West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry are set to go to the polls next year. The special revision will officially commence tomorrow in all 12 states and union territories.
