New Toll Payment Rules From November 15: Cash Payers to Be Charged Double

FASTag Lane Rules Updated: Cash Payment Becomes Costlier: Starting November 15, the central government has introduced a major change in the highway toll payment system to reduce congestion and encourage digital transactions. The new rules apply to all vehicles passing through FASTag lanes.

Under the updated system, if a vehicle’s FASTag fails to scan or is not affixed, the toll amount will now depend on the mode of payment. Earlier, in all such cases, drivers were required to pay double the normal toll. However, the new rules offer relief to those opting for digital methods.

If the driver pays in cash, the penalty remains the same—they must pay double the normal toll. But if the payment is made through digital modes such as UPI or other electronic platforms, the charge will be 1.25 times the normal toll.

For example, if the standard toll is Rs 100, a cash payer without a working FASTag will be charged Rs 200, while a digital payer will pay Rs 125.

The government says this change will promote digital payments, reduce cash handling errors, and speed up vehicle movement at toll plazas. Since FASTag failures often occur due to technical glitches, expired tags, or scanner issues, drivers choosing digital payments will now face a significantly lower penalty and avoid unnecessary financial burden.
