Flight Delays Or Cancellations: How to Claim Compensation: Passengers in India have been facing a lot of problems due to flight delays for the past few days. Flights are being cancelled at the last minute for some reason. As a result, passengers are expressing their dissatisfaction as they are not able to reach their destinations on time. Recently, flights to the Middle East were cancelled due to unrest in the Middle East. Similarly, flights were also disrupted due to bad weather. Passengers expressed their dissatisfaction on social media.

What to do if your flight is delayed:-

If you have checked in, but your flight is delayed, the airline must provide you with food and drinks. If the flight is delayed for more than 6 hours after 8 pm or up to 24 hours, the airline must provide free hotel accommodation for passengers.

What will airlines do if domestic flights are delayed?

  • Airlines will inform passengers of the revised departure time 24 hours in advance.
  • An alternative flight will be provided within 6 hours.
  • The airline will provide a full refund of the ticket price.
  • Your country’s refund rules will also apply to international flights.

What to do if flights are cancelled:-

  • If your flight is canceled after you arrive at the airport, you can receive compensation based on the flight’s scheduled time.
  • Airlines must notify passengers within two weeks or 24 hours in advance if flights are canceled.
  • An alternative flight will be provided within 2 hours of the scheduled time.
  • If the airline notifies the passenger upon arrival at the airport, the passenger will receive a full refund of the ticket, food and drinks, and compensation for the flight duration.

How much compensation will you get?

Rs 5,000 for more than 1 hour, Rs 7,500 for a delay of 1 to 2 hours, and Rs 10,000 for more than 2 hours.

Special Note:- If the airline has tried to contact you to inform you about a flight cancellation or delay, but your contact details are incorrect, then you are not eligible for compensation. Although you can request a refund and an alternative flight from the airline.

When compensation cannot be obtained:-

When flights are cancelled or delayed due to reasons beyond the control of the airline, such as strict inspections as per the DGCA guidelines, geopolitical issues, and adverse weather conditions, the airline will not compensate the passengers. Therefore, the airline company will only provide food, shelter, and alternative flight services.

What passengers need to do:-

  • Keep a record of check-in times, boarding passes, and the time you reported any flight delays or cancellations. Keep all documents handy.
  • Communicate with airline staff at the airport.
  • Airlines are required to provide you with written information about the reasons for flight delays and cancellations.

Where to complain:-

  • Complain to the airport help desk.
  • File a complaint on www.AirSewa.com, the Air Sewa app, or the DGCA website.
  • If the airline denies your claim, report it to the consumer forum.
  • Check airline staff and official websites regularly for all airline information.
