Odia medical student rape case in west bengal

Allegations of the gang rape of a medical college student in Durgapur, West Bengal, have heated up state politics. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed the police to take strict action, but sparked controversy by questioning the victim’s late-night outing. He said three people have already been arrested for gang rape. He also questioned how the student managed to leave the private medical college in Durgapur at night.

He said, “This incident is truly horrific. From what I’ve heard, the victim studied at a private medical college, so who is responsible? How did she leave the campus at 12:30 a.m. and go to the forested area? The private medical college concerned should take action. Girls, in particular, should not be out too often at night. They must ensure their own safety.”

Girls should not go out at night.
He said, “The girl was studying at a private medical college. How did she get out at 12:30 in the night? As far as I know, the incident happened in the woods. I don’t know what happened. The investigation is ongoing. I am shocked by this incident, but private medical colleges should also take care of their students, especially girls.”

Mamata Banerjee said, “…girls should not be allowed to go out (from the college) at night. They must also protect themselves. This is a forest area. The police are searching everyone. No one will be spared. Whoever is found guilty will be severely punished. Three people have already been arrested. We will take strict action…”

What action has the Odisha government taken? Mamata asked.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “This is a private college. Three weeks ago, three girls were raped on a beach in Odisha. What action is the Odisha government taking?”
He said, “When this happens in other states, it’s also condemnable. Such incidents have occurred in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha; we also believe the government should take strict action there. In our state, we filed a charge sheet within a month or two, and the lower court ordered the death penalty for the accused.”
