Six killed as construction ropeway collapses at Pavagadh Temple in Gujarat

Gujarat Ropeway Collapse: 6 Killed At Pavagadh Hill Temple After Cable Snaps: In a tragic incident on Saturday afternoon, the cable of a cargo ropeway snapped on Pavagadh hill in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district, leading to the death of six people and injuring four others. The accident occurred around 3 PM while the trolley was descending the hill, carrying goods and six individuals.

According to officials, the deceased include two lift operators, two labourers, and two others, while the injured are receiving medical treatment. The ropeway was primarily used for transporting cargo and not passengers.

The accident took place near the famous Kali temple, located at an elevation of 800 meters. The main passenger ropeway had already been shut for public use for the past two days due to bad weather, while the cargo system continued operations.

Superintendent of Police Harish Dudhat confirmed the deaths, and Collector Ajay Dahiya stated that an inquiry has been launched. A committee has been formed to investigate potential safety lapses that led to the cable snapping. Eyewitness reports indicate the rope to the pole had bent in half, suggesting a possible structural failure.

Government spokesperson Rishikesh Patel emphasized that the administration is awaiting the preliminary investigation report, after which strict action will be taken. He clarified that there are two separate ropeways at the site — one for cargo and one for passengers — and only the cargo ropeway was involved in the incident.

The Pavagadh temple, a major religious destination dedicated to Goddess Kali, attracts around 25 lakh visitors annually. This tragedy has sparked concerns over maintenance and safety standards at such high-traffic pilgrimage sites.
