Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc In Odisha: Waterlogging Situation In Balasore
Heavy Rain Triggers Severe Waterlogging Situation In Odisha: A low-pressure area that has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further and become a well-defined system. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the Odisha coast. As a result, heavy rainfall is affecting many parts of the state, especially in western Odisha.
Districts such as Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda have already experienced significant rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur today, prompting the issuance of a yellow warning for these districts.
Additionally, thundershowers with heavy rainfall are likely in the districts of Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Koraput, Balangir, and Nuapada. A yellow warning has also been issued for Odisha’s coastal and adjacent areas, with the rainfall expected to continue until September 6th.
Due to this ongoing weather system, the water level of the Jalaka river is rising steadily. At Mathani, the warning level is 6.00 meters, but by 6 AM, the water level had already reached 6.03 meters. This rise is attributed to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas such as Basta, Rasgobindpur, Morada, Shuliapada, and Chittarada.
Given the continued rise in water levels, a flood situation is anticipated. If flooding occurs, it may affect 10 panchayats in Basta block — Mathani, Bharda, Kudia, Dudha Hansa, Basi Chakurai, Darada, Mukulisi, Sadanandapur, Brahmananda, and Barungadia — and 2 panchayats in Sadar block, namely Srirampur and Rasalpur.
