The purity of gold is measured by carat. 24 carat gold means completely pure gold. 22 carat has 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals. Similarly, 21 and 18 carats also have other metals mixed in them. In western countries, it is shown in fineness. For example, 24 carat means 1,000 out of 1,000 pure, i.e. fineness 1.000.
22 carat is calculated like this: Divide 22 by 24 to get fineness of .9166, i.e. 916.66 purity. Fineness of 21 carat is .875 and that of 18 carat is .750. Hence, 22 carat is represented by fineness of .9166 or 916.66.

How much gold can we bring from Dubai?
Bringing gold from Dubai is not easy, unless you follow the rules. If you have been abroad for more than 6 months, you can bring up to 1 kg of gold in checked bags, provided you declare it and pay customs duty. Indian women can bring up to 40 grams or Rs 1 lakh of gold duty-free. Men can bring up to 20 grams or Rs 50,000 of gold.
If there are children, even children below 15 years of age can bring jewellery up to 40 grams worth up to Rs 1 lakh without duty. In total, a passenger can bring only 1 kg of gold. Make sure to show bills and receipts at the airport.

• 3% for men from 20 to 50 grams / 3% for women and children from 40 to 100 grams
• 6% per 50 to 100 grams for men / 6% per 100 to 200 grams for women and children
