How To Care For A Newborn In Winter ? 5 Ways To Care For Your Newborn Baby : Winter requires a lot of attention to health. Children and adults alike can suffer from colds, coughs, and seasonal illnesses. In this situation, caring for newborns becomes especially important, as their skin and body are still developing. Dr. N. Varsha Monica Reddy, Consultant Pediatric Neurologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, explains how to care for newborns during winter.
child safety
The ideal room temperature range is 20–22°C (68–72°F). To reduce the risk of suffocation, use a sleep bag or blanket instead of a loose quilt. Place your baby on their back in a crib that is free of pillows, bumpers, or heavy blankets. Cover their head, arms, and legs outdoors. A hat is not necessary indoors unless the area is well-ventilated.
Hydration and moisturization
During winter, ensure your baby stays well hydrated and moisturized. Newborns should be bathed every two to three days with lukewarm water and fragrance-free products like petroleum jelly, as cold air dehydrates their delicate skin, leading to cracks or dermatitis. Babies don’t need extra water, so offer them formula or breast milk regularly. Check wet diapers for signs of dehydration; try to change at least six diapers daily.
Boost immunity
Winter brings viruses like the flu and RSV. So, make sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date, including the flu shot starting at six months of age. Limit guests, especially those with colds, and ensure they wash their hands. Use a cool-mist humidifier to combat dry indoor air from heaters and reduce congestion and coughs.
Things you need for going out
If it’s not too cold, you can take short walks. If it’s windy or polluted, avoid going outside.
Signs of trouble?
If you experience lethargy, poor eating, a fever above 38°C (100.4°F), or difficulty breathing, you should go to the hospital immediately.
