Boat Carrying 300 Migrants from Myanmar Capsizes in Indian Ocean; Dozens Feared Dead, Hundreds Missing

Hundreds Missing After Migrant Boat Sinks Near Malaysia-Thailand Border: A tragic maritime disaster unfolded near the Thailand–Malaysia border as a boat carrying about 300 migrants from Myanmar capsized in the Indian Ocean, leaving hundreds missing. Only 10 people were rescued, while the body of one woman was recovered from the sea. Rescue operations began late after authorities received delayed information about the incident, making it difficult to determine the exact time and location of the sinking.

Officials said the boat likely capsized in Thai waters, and cross-border human trafficking networks are suspected to have played a role in the tragedy. Malaysian authorities warned that such gangs are increasingly exploiting vulnerable migrants by using unsafe sea routes to transport them. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency launched a search and rescue mission on Saturday after survivors were found near Langkawi Island.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated boat had departed from Buthidaung town in Myanmar’s Rakhine state about three days before it sank. Many of the rescued passengers were identified as Rohingya Muslims, a persecuted minority from Myanmar who have long fled violence and oppression in search of safety. Authorities continue to search the surrounding waters for survivors, but hopes are fading as the hours pass.
