Trump Claims Modi Assures India Will Halt Russian Oil Purchases Amid Push to Isolate Moscow
In a significant diplomatic development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will stop buying oil from Russia. Speaking at an event at the White House on Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he had expressed dissatisfaction over India’s energy ties with Moscow. “I was not happy that India is buying oil, and today they assured me that they will not buy oil from Russia,” Trump said, calling it a “big step” toward economically isolating Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Trump’s remarks come as the United States intensifies efforts to enforce sanctions against Russia and rally global support to curb Moscow’s energy revenue. While acknowledging that India cannot halt imports immediately due to logistical challenges, Trump said the process is underway. India, currently the second-largest buyer of Russian oil after China, has not officially confirmed Trump’s claims.
