Jaishankar meets Putin in Moscow amid Trump’s tariff threats
Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar Meets With President Putin In Moscow: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday. Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Russia. His visit comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has imposed an additional punitive tariff of 25 percent on India for buying oil from Russia.
Jaishankar’s meeting with Putin came hours after extensive talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which mainly focused on enhancing trade ties between the two countries. It is believed that Jaishankar discussed ways to further strengthen India-Russia relations with Putin.
What did Jaishankar say?
In a post on social media, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that he conveyed warm greetings from President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi to President Putin. He said, “I apprised him of my discussions with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Preparations for the annual summit are in full swing. (I) appreciate their shared views on the global situation and the recent developments in Ukraine.”

Earlier, Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, to discuss bilateral relations and prepare for the annual summit to be held at the end of the year. In his address, Jaishankar said, “Today’s meeting has allowed us not only to discuss our political relations but also to review our bilateral relations. Therefore, I look forward to exchanging views on politics, trade, economic investment, defense, science and technology, and of course, people-to-people contact.”
It is worth noting that the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said regarding Jaishankar’s three-day visit to Russia that the purpose of his visit is to further strengthen the long-term and time-tested India-Russia special and privileged strategic partnership.
