Government Cracks Down on X Over Objectionable Content Created Using ‘Grok’
Indian Government Issues Strict Notice to X Over Misuse of AI Tool ‘Grok’ for Objectionable Content: The Indian government has issued a strict notice to social media platform X over the alleged misuse of its artificial intelligence service ‘Grok’. The notice has been sent by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), citing serious concerns about the creation and circulation of objectionable and sexually explicit content targeting women.
According to MeitY, reports have emerged that users are exploiting Grok’s AI capabilities to generate synthetic images and videos that are derogatory in nature and violate the privacy, dignity, and safety of women. The ministry stated that such misuse amounts to a failure by X to comply with its responsibilities under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021.
The government has termed the matter extremely serious, emphasizing that the spread of such content encourages sexual harassment and undermines existing legal safeguards meant to protect women. MeitY has made it clear that the misuse of emerging technologies like AI will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The notice directs X to respond and explain the corrective measures it plans to implement to prevent further misuse of Grok. The ministry has also warned that failure to comply with Indian laws and regulations could result in further action against the platform.
The government reiterated that while technological innovation is welcome, it must be accompanied by accountability and responsible use, especially when issues related to the safety and dignity of women are involved.
