Railway Fare Hike: Long Journeys to Become More Expensive from 26th
Indian Railways to Hike Passenger Fares from 26th, Long-Distance Travellers to Pay More: Indian Railways has announced an increase in passenger fares across multiple categories, a move that will come into effect from the 26th of this month. The revised fare structure is expected to impact frequent and long-distance travellers, while passengers travelling short distances will see little to no change.
According to the new rules, passengers travelling in the general category for distances up to 215 kilometres will not face any fare hike. However, for journeys beyond 215 km, passengers will have to pay an additional 1 paisa per kilometre.
For those travelling on Mail and Express trains, the fare increase will be more noticeable. Passengers in non-AC and second-class coaches will be charged 2 paise extra per kilometre. This means that for a journey of 500 km, a passenger will have to pay ₹10 more than the earlier fare.
To explain with an example, the distance between Patna and Delhi is approximately 1,000 km. If a passenger travels on a Janata Express, the additional fare will be around ₹10. However, if the journey is undertaken on premium trains such as Sampath Kranti, Vande Bharat, or Rajdhani Express, the passenger will have to pay ₹20 extra.
This is not the first fare revision this year. Earlier, on July 1, Indian Railways had increased ticket prices for long-distance travel. At that time, fares for Mail and Express trains were raised by 1 paisa per kilometre, while AC class fares were increased by 2 paise per kilometre. With the latest revision, fares have now gone up by 2 to 3 paise per kilometre, depending on the category of travel.
Railway officials stated that the fare revision aims to balance operational costs while keeping short-distance travel affordable. Passengers are advised to check updated fares while booking tickets after the implementation date.
