India’s First Hydrogen Train Launch
India’s First Hydrogen Train To Roll Soon : The first hydrogen train will soon run in India. The hydrogen train will run for the first time in Haryana, India. The train will run from Jind to Sonipat. A hydrogen plant is under construction in Jind to fuel this train. India will be the fifth country in the world where this hydrogen train will run. This train is already running in Germany, France, Sweden and China.
Railway Minister Ashwani Baishnab shared a video of the train on his X handle on Tuesday evening. The video talks about the design and uniqueness of the train. This hydrogen train will be the most powerful and longest hydrogen-powered train in the world. The trial of the first hydrogen-powered train coach has been completed at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
The Railway Ministry shared an official X post and wrote, “India’s Hydrogen Journey! For the first time in India, a hydrogen-powered train is ready for its final operational phase. This is a historic event that showcases a technology from India, inspiring the world.”

Indian Railways plans to run 35 hydrogen trains in the country. Each train will cost around Rs 80 crore. The Jinder refueling station will have two dispensers with 3,000 kg hydrogen storage, a compressor and pre-cooler integration for fast fueling. The Jinder-Gohana-Sonepat railway track is about 89 km long. The speed of the hydrogen train will be 110 to 140 km per hour. The train can carry 2,638 passengers at a time. This 8-coach train will be based on hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The hydrogen train is the world’s most powerful and longest hydrogen-powered train. It was tested at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai in July. This train will emit steam instead of smoke, which will not cause pollution. The train will be eco-friendly. Compared to diesel-powered trains, hydrogen trains are expensive. The price of hydrogen fuel per kg is Rs 492.
Important Facts Regarding India’s First Hydrogen Train:
As per Indian Railways, the new hydrogen fuel train is planned to be one of the world’s most powerful and longest such trains, with a whopping capability of carrying 2,600 passengers. This comes after the successful trial run of its first hydrogen fuel train coach at Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) recently.
In July, Minister Vaishnaw had posted a video of these trials, highlighting India’s zeal for a “future-ready and sustainable India.” He had also earlier said, “India is making a 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will make India one of the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology.”
Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Vaishnaw presented ambitious proposals for 35 hydrogen trains as part of the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ project. Each train is estimated to be about Rs 80 crore, and an extra Rs 70 crore is being earmarked for infrastructure building particularly for heritage and hill routes.
