Kartik Purnima 365-Wick Diya: Significance, Preparation, and Rituals

Kartik Purnima Special: Light a 365-Wick Diya to Invite Year-Round Blessings: In the Hindu Sanatan tradition, the full moon day (Purnima) of every month is considered highly auspicious. Devotees offer special prayers to Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe, and the Moon God. While every full moon brings spiritual benefits, the full moon in the holy month of Kartik holds exceptional significance. Religious texts state that taking a dip in holy rivers on Kartik Purnima is equivalent to performing 100 Ashwamedha Yagyas, highlighting the immense spiritual merit of the day.

During Kartik, bathing in the Ganges and lighting lamps are particularly emphasized. However, if someone is unable to visit rivers or temples, lighting a lamp with 365 wicks at home is considered a powerful alternative. This simple act is believed to bring blessings not just for the month but for the entire year. The lamp can be placed in your home temple, near a Tulsi plant, Peepal tree, banana tree, or any nearby temple.

Significance of the 365-Wick Lamp

  • Symbolism: The 365 wicks represent each day of the year, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
  • Spiritual Benefits: Lighting the lamp is believed to destroy sins, remove negative energy, correct Vastu defects, and bring happiness, prosperity, and peace into the home.
  • Special Occasions: While also lit on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, the most auspicious time is on the evening of Kartik Purnima.

How to Make a 365-Wick Lamp

Making the Wick:

  1. Take a sacred Kalava thread (red or yellow) and wrap it around your hand 73 times.
  2. Cut off the remaining thread.
  3. Cut the wrapped Kalava in the middle and straighten the threads, creating 365 thin wicks.
  4. Tie them together to form a single thick wick.
