Iconic ‘Sholay’ Star Dharmendra Dies at 89, Bollywood Mourns Loss

Veteran Bollywood superstar Dharmendra, affectionately known as the He-Man of Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday. The iconic actor breathed his last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for several days due to respiratory complications. The news of his demise was confirmed by Bobby Deol’s PR team, plunging the entire film industry and millions of fans into mourning.

Dharmendra, born Dharmendra Kewal Krishna Deol on December 8, 1935, in Nasrani village, Punjab, made his Bollywood debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Over his illustrious 65-year career, he featured in more than 250 films, including timeless classics like Sholay (1975), Chupke Chupke (1975), Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Sita Aur Geeta (1972), and Dharamveer (1977). Known for his charm, strength, and versatility, Dharmendra became one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved stars.

The actor is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Esha, Ahana, Vijeta, and Ajita Deol. Family members, including Hema Malini and his children, were by his side during his final days. His last film, “Ikkis,” featuring Agastya Nanda in his debut role, is slated for release on December 25, 2025. As tributes pour in from across the nation, the Indian film fraternity remembers Dharmendra not only as a cinematic legend but as a symbol of strength, humility, and timeless grace.
