Longest Bridge In India
The country’s longest bridge is nearly complete in Bihar . Currently, the Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya Setu) in Assam is the longest road bridge in India, spanning over 9.15 km and spanning the Brahmaputra River. This new bridge, built over the Kosi River in Bihar, is over 10 km long. Its completion will reduce the distance between Madhubani and Supaul by approximately 30 km. The bridge is being constructed under a national infrastructure project aimed at promoting economic development in areas long cut off due to river-geographical and flood-related challenges. This major infrastructure project is considered a major step toward improving connectivity in northern Bihar.
The country’s longest bridge is being built on the Kosi River.
The construction of the 10.2-km-long Mahasetu over the Kosi River is progressing rapidly. It is expected to cost approximately ₹1,200 crore, and includes 171 pillars and 170 spans. Seventy-six spans on the Madhubani side and 56 on the Supaul side have been completed. It was scheduled to be completed in 2024, but it will take at least 12-18 months more to complete.
The distance between Supaul and Madhubani will be reduced by 30 km.
Once this bridge is built, the distance between Supaul and Madhubani will be reduced by 30 km; the current 100 km journey could be shortened to 70 km. This bridge, being constructed over the Kosi River, is located between Bakour in Supaul district and Bejha in Madhubani district and directly connects both banks (eastern and western) of the river. This bridge will therefore become the longest bridge in the country.
The construction of the bridge will benefit
This bridge is also extremely important from a strategic perspective. Its construction will facilitate connectivity between the northeastern states and Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. The bridge is being constructed by Gammon India and Trans Rail Lighting Pvt. Ltd. It is one of five packages of the Bharatmala Project.
