The sacred relics of Buddha are being brought back

The display of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, which had been taking place in Kalmykia, Russia since October 11, concluded on October 18. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has now arrived in Russia to bring them back to India. Sinha stated that the display of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha in Kalmykia will strengthen people-to-people ties between India and Russia.

Speaking to media persons after paying his respects to the relics kept at the prestigious Geden Shedup Choikorling Monastery, known as the ‘Golden Abode of Shakyamuni Buddha’, he said that the display of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha in Kalmykia is a historic event that represents a historic return of faith for the Kalmyk people, the only Buddhist nation in Europe, according to a press release from the Ministry of Culture.

He also said that it stands as a powerful bridge of spiritual friendship between India and Russia, reflecting India’s efforts in cultural relations and the unifying power of Buddha’s teachings.

Lieutenant Governor receives blessings in Kalmykia
The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir honored Bakula Rinpoche’s sacred relics and his statue by placing a ceremonial scarf (khatak). He also lit a lamp, offered prayers, and received blessings from religious leaders.

Why has Sinha gone to Russia?
Manoj Sinha arrived in Russia on Friday to bring back the sacred relics of Lord Buddha to India, following their exhibition in Elista, the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia. Sinha, who leads the Indian delegation, was welcomed by First Vice-President of the Kalmykia Government Tsyrenov Erdniy Nikolayevich, Vice-President Dzhambinov Ochir Vladimirovich, and Indian Deputy Prime Minister Nikhilesh Giri. The delegation will bring back the sacred relics to India on October 19, 2025.

Earlier, Sinha announced his departure for Kalmykia, saying he would lead a delegation to bring back the sacred relics of Lord Buddha. In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor’s office said, “I am leaving for Kalmykia, Russia, where I will lead a delegation to bring back the sacred relics of Lord Buddha after a week-long exhibition. I express my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this auspicious opportunity.”
