Union Cabinet Likely to Approve New Name for MNREGA Scheme

MNREGA May Be Renamed Pujya Bapu Gramin Yojana, Union Cabinet Likely to Take a Decision : There is growing speculation that the central government may soon change the name of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). According to sources, the Union Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet today, may consider and approve a proposal to rename the flagship rural employment scheme as Pujya Bapu Gramin Yojana.

Reports suggest that the proposed new name aims to rebrand one of the world’s largest job guarantee programmes. Initially launched in 2005 during the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), the scheme was later renamed MGNREGA to honour Mahatma Gandhi.

MGNREGA is a key labour law and social security initiative implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development. It guarantees the legal right to employment by providing up to 100 days of wage employment every year to rural households. Over the years, the scheme has played a significant role in providing economic security, creating rural infrastructure, empowering women, reducing migration, and promoting social equality.

By 2022–23, nearly 154 million people were actively employed under the scheme, making it a cornerstone of rural welfare and livelihood support in India.
