SIT Raids Homes of Festival Organiser and Manager in Zubeen Garg Death Case; CM May Recommend CBI Probe
Mystery Around Zubeen Garg’s Death: SIT conducts raids, CM says will seek CBI probe if needed: The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed to look into the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, raided the homes of North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and his manager Siddharth Sharma on Thursday.
The SIT visited Mahanta’s house in Geetanagar, where only two assistants were present. Another team went to Sharma’s flat in Dhirenpada, which was found locked. The police broke open the door in the presence of a magistrate and searched the apartment. Residents said Sharma’s family has been missing since Zubeen’s death.
Zubeen Garg died by drowning in Singapore on September 19, where he had gone to perform at a festival. In response, the Assam government set up a 10-member SIT, led by CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, to investigate the matter.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that those who were with Zubeen in Singapore, including festival organisers and members of the Assam Association, will be questioned. He also stated that if the SIT’s findings are not satisfactory, the government will recommend a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) inquiry.
The Chief Minister urged people to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumors on social media, which could disrupt the investigation. He assured that the state is committed to uncovering the truth and bringing justice, but asked for patience as courts rely on evidence, not emotions.
Sarma added that six years ago, he had called Zubeen an “asset to the state” and had warned him about certain people using him for personal gain. He said, “We all love Zubeen and want justice, but we must let the investigation happen properly and carefully.”
