First Women Prime Minister of Nepal
Ending the political vacuum in Nepal following the fall of the K P Sharma Oli government after violent protests earlier this week, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister on Friday night, making her the first woman to lead the country.
Karki, 73, was administered the oath of office by President Ramchandra Paudel who also dissolved the House of Representatives.

The interim government has been asked to hold elections to Parliament in six months.
Sushilla will lead the interim government until the next elections in the country. The demand of Gen Z for a radical change in the constitution is said to be a big challenge for the interim government. The President dissolved the parliament today and entrusted the caretaker prime minister with the responsibility of running the government. Sushilla Karki was the first female Chief Justice of Nepal and held the post from 2016 to 2017. She was educated at Banaras Hindu University in India and has a history of praising India’s strong leadership and cooperation with Nepal. Sushilla has gained immense popularity among the youth for her tough stance against corruption.
Sushilla will recommend the imposition of a state of emergency in her first cabinet meeting in view of the current situation in the country. According to Article 273 of the Nepali Constitution, the country can declare a state of emergency for a maximum of six months in the event of war, natural disaster, armed rebellion or other serious crisis. After Sushilla was elected as the leader today, Gen Z leader Sudan Gurung said that the constitution should be amended and very strict steps should be taken to stop corruption. Gen Z is hopeful that the government will work with sincerity for the welfare of all.
