Nepal Lifts Social Media Ban After Deadly Gen-Z Protests

Nepal Lifts Ban On Social Media Apps After Deadly Protests: The Nepal government has officially lifted the ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp, following widespread protests. The decision was announced by Information and Communication Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung after an emergency cabinet meeting on September 8, 2025.

At least 21 people died and over 300 were injured during the protests, which were primarily led by the youth group called ‘Gen G’. The protests escalated when demonstrators stormed the Parliament premises in Kathmandu, leading police to use water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition to control the crowd.

The ban had been imposed just three days earlier because the government accused these platforms of operating without valid registration in Nepal. Despite lifting the ban, Minister Gurung stated the government stands by its initial decision but was compelled to act due to the unrest sparked by the youth protests.

Social media services resumed late Monday night, and the government has urged protesters to end demonstrations and restore peace.
