Trump Hints at Tariffs on Indian Rice, Canadian Fertilizer; Unveils $12B Aid for U.S. Farmers
New Tariffs on Indian Rice, Canadian Fertilizer Possible, Trump Says; $12B Aid Rolled Out: U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that his administration may soon impose new tariffs on Indian rice and Canadian fertilizer, citing growing concerns among American farmers over foreign imports. The announcement came during the rollout of a $12 billion aid package aimed at supporting U.S. farmers facing rising costs and increasing global competition.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said that some countries, including India, are “dumping” rice into the American market at unfairly low prices. “They can’t do that. We won’t allow it,” he warned, adding that local rice producers have been suffering due to the influx of cheaper imports from India, Vietnam, and Thailand.
American farmers have repeatedly raised concerns that declining rice prices—driven by low-cost foreign imports—are hurting their livelihoods. Trump said his administration is prepared to take “firm action,” hinting at the possibility of new tariffs specifically targeting imported rice.
Earlier this year, the U.S. had already imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on several Indian goods, citing India’s high tariffs on American products and its energy trade with Russia. The latest comments have fueled speculation that rice may be the next item on the tariff list.
The president also took aim at Canadian fertilizer, saying he is considering heavy tariffs to boost domestic fertilizer production. “A lot of the fertilizer used in America comes from Canada. If necessary, we will impose heavy tariffs on that as well,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, U.S. trade negotiations with both India and Canada are ongoing. A high-level American delegation is set to visit India this week, while talks with Canada continue under the framework of the USMCA. Trump has threatened additional tariffs on Canadian products in the past if negotiations fail to yield results.
Despite concerns over rising trade tensions, Trump emphasized that his administration’s priority is protecting American farmers. The newly announced $12 billion aid package is expected to provide relief amid inflation, increased production costs, and global competition. Farmers remain a critical political base for Trump and played a significant role in his victory in the 2024 elections.
