Nigeria State Boat Capsize: Several Missing, Death Toll Rises: A boat accident occurred in a river in north-central Nigeria. 60 people died in the accident. Officials said that a boat collided with a tree trunk in the Borgu area of Niger state. There were 90 people on board. Nigeria’s National Emergency Agency said that so far, 50 people have been rescued, but the number of missing people is not known. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Boat accidents in remote areas of Africa’s most populous country are common during the rainy season. These accidents are often caused by overloaded and poorly maintained boats, many of which operate without life jackets. Last month, 25 people were declared missing after a boat capsized in a river in the northwestern state of Sokoto.
