North Korean Citizen Faces Harsh Punishment For Watching Film: A shocking new UN human rights report has revealed that North Korea is executing citizens —sometimes publicly—for watching or distributing foreign TV shows, especially South Korean dramas. The 14-page report, based on interviews with over 300 escapees and witnesses, highlights an alarming rise in surveillance and brutal punishments aimed at suppressing personal freedoms in the country.
According to the report, the North Korean regime has intensified control over its citizens since 2015, with conditions worsening after the COVID-19 pandemic. UN official James Heenan noted a sharp increase in death sentences for both political and non-political crimes. Even children are reportedly being forced into labor, working in dangerous environments like mines and construction sites as part of state-assigned “shock brigades.”
The report also accuses North Korea of targeting poor families more harshly, as wealthier citizens often bribe their way out of such punishment. Despite these serious allegations, North Korea has outright rejected the UN’s findings, claiming they are baseless and politically motivated. The international community, however, continues to express grave concern over the worsening human rights situation inside the isolated nation.
