Viral Video of Army Spokesman Winking at Journalist Triggers Public Backlash

Pakistani Army Spokesman’s Wink at Journalist Sparks Outrage as Video Goes Viral: A press conference held in Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday has sparked widespread criticism after Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, appeared to make an inappropriate gesture toward a female journalist.

The incident occurred when the reporter questioned the DG ISPR about the strong language being used against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, asking why he was being labelled a “threat to national security,” “anti-national,” and “working at the behest of India,” and whether this reflected a shift in the military’s official position.

In response, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif laughed and said, “Add a fourth point: there’s also a ‘mental patient.’” Moments later, he smiled and winked at the female journalist — a gesture that was captured on camera and quickly circulated online.

Public Anger on Social Media

The gesture sparked immediate outrage across social media platforms, with users calling it “shameful,” “unprofessional,” and “a mockery of democratic values.” Many criticized the act as disrespectful toward the journalist and unbecoming of a senior military official, describing it as “the end of professionalism” and “a new low for the military.”

No Official Response Yet

As of now, the Pakistani military has not released a statement addressing the incident. Analysts say the silence could be due to the sensitivity of the matter, warning that such behaviour from a senior spokesperson may further damage the military’s public image at a time when institutional credibility remains under scrutiny.
