A Temple Where Living People Perform Their Own Shradh
Pitru Paksha 2025 : This year Pitru Paksha is starting from 7 September 2025 and will end on 21 September. In this special period, the Shradh and Pinddaan of ancestors have special significance.
Pitru Paksha is going to start from next month. In Pitru Paksha, people belonging to Hindu religion perform Shradh for the peace of the soul of their ancestors. Pitru Paksha runs every year from Bhadrapada Purnima to Ashwin Amavasya. In this special period, Shradh and Pinddaan of ancestors have special significance. It is believed that the Shradh performed during this time provides peace and salvation to the soul of ancestors. Usually this ritual is done for the dead. But have you ever heard that a person can perform his own Shradh even while he is alive? There is such a wonderful temple in Gaya, Bihar, where Atm Shradh i.e. Pinddaan of oneself is performed while alive.

Importance of Gaya – It is believed that after performing Pind Daan in Gaya Ji, one gets freedom from the debt of ancestors. Lord Shri Ram, Laxman and Mother Sita also performed Shraddha and Pind Daan for the peace of the soul of King Dasharath on the banks of the Falgu river here in the Treta Yuga. This is the reason why even today Gaya Ji is considered the biggest pilgrimage place for Pitru Shraddha.
Where does Atma Shraddha take place?
There are about 54 Pindvedis and 53 holy places in Gaya Ji, where Pinddaan of ancestors is done. But Janardan Mandir Vedi is the only place in the who whole world, where a living person performs his own Shraddha. This temple is situated on Bhasmkut mountain, to the north of Maa Mangala Gauri temple. It is believed that here Lord Vishnu himself accepts Pind in the form of Janardan Swami. Usually those people come here to perform their Atma Shraddh. Those who do not have children. Or there is no one in the family to perform Pinddaan after them. Or those who have distanced themselves from their family due to saintly-renunciation feelings come here to perform their Pinddaan.
