PM Modi Becomes 2nd Longest Serving PM, Breaks Indira Gandhi’s Record: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, July 25, 2025, completed the record of being the Prime Minister of India for 4,078 consecutive days, making him the second longest-serving Prime Minister in this category, surpassing Indira Gandhi (4,077 days, 24 January 1966 – 24 March 1977). Now, only the first Prime Minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru, is ahead of PM Modi.
PM Modi is at number two
PM Modi has already equaled the first Prime Minister like Jawaharlal Nehru in terms of winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, 2024). However, in terms of tenure, Modi is behind Jawaharlal Nehru. The country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, is at the top in terms of being the PM for the longest number of consecutive days. He remained in this post from 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964, i.e., for a total of 6126 days continuously.
Many records in the name of PM Modi
Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014, and then as Prime Minister from 26 May 2014. He became the first Indian leader to serve as head of an elected government at both the state and the centre (a total of over 24 years). Modi is the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and leads all non-Congress Prime Ministers in total length of service.
Great record of election victory
Gujarat-born Modi is also the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms as the head of the central government, officials said. Modi is the only leader among all prime ministers and chief ministers of India to have won six consecutive elections as a party leader – Gujarat assembly elections in 2002, 2007, and 2012, and general elections in 2014, 2019 and 2024, an official said.
