PM Modi Welcomes President Putin as Russian Leader Begins Two-Day Visit to India; Gita in Russian Presented
PM Modi Gifts President Putin A Russian-Language Gita: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for a two-day official visit, marking his first trip to India since the Russia–Ukraine conflict began in 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed President Putin upon his arrival, setting a warm and symbolic tone for the visit.
In a special gesture, Prime Minister Modi presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita, describing the sacred text as a source of inspiration for millions around the world. Sharing the moment on Instagram, PM Modi wrote that he was pleased to gift the Gita in Russian and emphasized its universal teachings.
The Kremlin acknowledged India’s warm reception, issuing a statement noting that PM Modi’s decision to walk up to President Putin’s plane was unexpected and had not been communicated in advance. Russian officials expressed appreciation for the gesture, highlighting it as a reflection of the strong ties between the two nations.
This visit holds significant diplomatic importance, being President Putin’s first trip to India since the Ukraine conflict erupted in 2022. Following their meeting, PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I am delighted to welcome my friend President Putin.” He added that the India–Russia friendship has “stood the test of time” and continues to benefit both nations.
The visit will culminate in the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit, scheduled for today. Leaders from both countries are expected to engage in wide-ranging discussions covering strategic, economic, and defense cooperation. President Putin will also receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
The high-level interactions are expected to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Russia.
