PM Modi Bhutan Visit
Prime Minister Modi is on a two-day foreign tour after the Bihar elections. Prime Minister Modi will visit Bhutan on November 11 and 12. This will be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fourth visit to the Himalayan nation since 2014. The visit is aimed at strengthening the special ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and is in line with the tradition of regular bilateral high-level dialogues. During the visit, the Prime Minister will meet His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan.
The two leaders will inaugurate the 1020 MW Puntsangchu-II Hydropower Project, jointly built by the Government of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan. The Prime Minister will also attend the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth King of Bhutan. The Prime Minister will also call on His Majesty Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan.
The Prime Minister’s visit coincides with the exhibition of the sacred Piprahwa relic of Lord Buddha from India. The Prime Minister will pray at the relic at Tashichhodzong, Thimphu and participate in the World Peace Prayer Festival organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to review the progress of two new India-Bhutan railway projects. These include the Kokrajhar-Gelephu link, which will connect Assam with southern Bhutan, and the Banerhat-Samatse line, which will connect West Bengal with southwestern Bhutan. Announced in September, these cross-border railway projects, measuring 69 km and 20 km respectively, will connect Bhutan with the border areas of Assam and West Bengal.
India and Bhutan share a unique and excellent partnership based on deep mutual trust, goodwill and mutual respect. Shared spiritual heritage and warm people-to-people ties are hallmarks of this special partnership. The Prime Minister’s visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss ways to further strengthen and enhance our bilateral partnership and exchange views on regional and wider issues of mutual interest.
