PM Modi, Italian PM Meloni Discuss India-EU Trade Deal and Global Issues
Prime Minister Modi Speaks With PM Giorgia Meloni: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday, focusing on the proposed India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and global matters, including the Ukraine war.
Modi thanked Meloni for her support of the FTA, which both sides aim to finalise by the end of 2025. Talks on the 13th round of negotiations are currently underway in New Delhi. India and the EU had resumed FTA discussions in June 2022 after an eight-year pause.
The two leaders also discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and called for an early resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Modi appreciated Italy’s active cooperation in enhancing connectivity through the IMEC initiative, which was formalised during the 2023 G20 Summit in Delhi.
Modi described the phone call as a “perfect conversation” and reiterated the commitment to deepen the India-Italy strategic partnership.
