Bright Lights Over Delhi-NCR Spark Curiosity: Experts Confirm Satellite Debris, Not Meteor Shower
Rare Meteorite Streaks Across Indian Skies, Lights Up Night Over Delhi And Gurugram: Residents of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram were left stunned last night as the skies lit up with brightly glowing spheres streaking across the sky. The intense illumination led many to believe they were witnessing a meteor shower or shooting stars. Videos of the rare sight quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and speculation.
However, scientists have now clarified that the phenomenon was not a meteor shower. According to O.P. Gupta, senior engineer at the Nehru Planetarium, the glowing objects were in fact burning satellite debris. “The lights seen in the sky were not meteors but pieces of an old satellite re-entering Earth’s atmosphere,” Gupta explained. Other space experts have also confirmed this explanation, ruling out any celestial events like comets or asteroids.
These incidents occur when non-functional or obsolete satellites in orbit start to fall back towards Earth. As they enter the dense layers of the atmosphere, the intense friction causes them to heat up and disintegrate, creating a bright, fiery trail in the sky. While the sight may resemble a meteor shower, such satellite re-entries are increasingly common due to the growing amount of space junk orbiting the planet.
