Russian scientists say cancer vaccine ready for use

Russian scientists have achieved a major milestone in the fight against cancer. The Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) has developed a new mRNA-based vaccine (Cancer vaccine Russia), which is now almost ready for use. Agency chief Veronika Skvortsova announced this vaccine (mRNA cancer vaccine) at the Eastern Economic Forum 2025. This vaccine, developed by FMBA, is known as Enteromix. Scientists claim that it has given excellent results in all pre-clinical trials. Its effect was clearly seen in patients suffering from tumors, such as a reduction in tumor size and inhibition of cancer cell growth. This vaccine (Russian FMBA vaccine) has been specially developed for colorectal cancer.

The specialty of this cancer vaccine
According to FMBA chief Skvortsova, the safety of this vaccine has been fully proven in the last three years. It has remained effective and safe even after multiple uses. This Russian vaccine reduces the size of tumors and also slows down their growth.

Vaccine trial and effect
Scientists have worked on this vaccine for more than three years. In animal tests, not only did the tumor shrink, but the patient’s life expectancy also increased. No serious side effects were found, which confirms its safety. Now, its human trials have also started.

How does this vaccine work?
This vaccine is based on mRNA technology, which became popular worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. This technology teaches the body’s immune system to identify cancer cells, causing the body to destroy them itself. The special thing is that this vaccine can be designed for personalized therapy – that is, it can be modified according to the nature of each patient’s cancer.

On which other cancers is work being done?
Initially, this vaccine will be used for colorectal cancer, but scientists say that they are also making vaccines using the same technology for brain cancer (glioblastoma) and eye cancer (ocular melanoma). Work on these is in its final stages.

When will it be available to the general public?
The Russian government has indicated that this vaccine has been given under trial use in some hospitals in Russia in the first quarter of 2025, and mass use is likely soon. It may cost around 3 lakh rubles (about $2800), but there are plans to provide it free of cost under the government health system in Russia.

A ray of hope for global peace
Russian President Vladimir Putin has described this vaccine as a “revolutionary step in health science”. This is a new hope in the fight against cancer, not only for Russia but for the whole world.

How many people in the world suffer from cancer?
The number of cancer cases is increasing rapidly every year across the world. In 2022, about 2 crore new patients were identified, and about 97 lakh people died due to cancer. These figures have come from the report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and GLOBOCAN. According to experts, cancer cases may increase by 75% by 2050. The main reasons for this are increasing age, poor lifestyle, tobacco, and pollution.

What is the situation of cancer in India?
The problem of cancer is becoming serious in India too. In 2024, about 15.3 lakh new cases were registered, and more than 8.2 lakh people died of cancer. These figures are according to the Ministry of Health of the Government of India and ICMR. The report says that by the end of 2025, this number can cross 15.7 lakh in India. Breast cancer is most commonly found in women, and mouth and lung cancer in men.

Statistics force you to think
However, such a large number of people suffering from cancer is not just a medical challenge but also a social and economic challenge. People do not get timely tests, and treatment is very expensive. In such a situation, it is important that the government and society together raise awareness and make treatment accessible. In such a situation, the invention of a cancer vaccine is like a ray of hope.
