S Mahendra Dev Appointed As Chairman Of PM’s Economic Advisory Council: The Government of India has appointed renowned economist Professor S Mahendra Dev as the new chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). This appointment is being seen as an important change in the country’s economic policymaking. Professor Mahendra Dev will hold this post full-time, due to which he has resigned from the board of directors of Axis Bank. Dev was working as an independent director in Axis Bank.
Professor Dev said in a letter to Axis Bank, I would like to inform that I have been appointed as the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. This is a full-time post. Therefore, I tender my resignation from the Board of Directors of Axis Bank at the end of business hours on 5 June 2025.
Career started in 1988
Professor S Mahendra Dev is a renowned economist. Dev started his career as an Assistant Professor at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai in 1988. After staying here for 10 years, Dev moved to Germany and was also a visiting professor at Bonn University there. From 1998 to 2008, he worked as the Director of the Hyderabad-based Centre for Economic Studies.
Dev held many important positions in the private sector:
In 2008, he was appointed Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) by the Central Government, where he served till August 2010. He also held important roles on the boards of the National Statistical Commission and the International Food Policy Research Institute. Professor Dev has also achieved many achievements in the private sector. He has been an independent director of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank. From 2010 to 2022, he was also the Director and Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research.

Education and Academic Achievements of mahendra dev:
Professor Dev obtained an MA degree in Economics from Acharya Nagarjuna University. After this, he completed his M.Phil and PhD from the Delhi School of Economics. In 1992-93, he also went to Yale University in America for post-doctoral research. His appointment is considered an important step towards giving a scientific, practical, and inclusive approach to the Prime Minister’s economic policies.
