Mob Killing in Bangladesh: Hindu Youth Dipu Chandra Lynched in Mymensingh, Seven Arrested
Seven Arrested in Bangladesh for Mob Killing of Hindu Youth in Mymensingh: Bangladesh has witnessed renewed tensions following the mob killing of a Hindu youth in Mymensingh amid a period of wider unrest in the country. The victim, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, was allegedly attacked and killed by a mob after accusations that he had made derogatory remarks about Islam during an event at his workplace.
Dipu Chandra, 25, was a labourer at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area of Mymensingh. According to police, the incident occurred during an event organised to mark World Arabic Language Day, after which tensions rapidly escalated. An angry mob allegedly assaulted him, leading to his death.
Abdul Malik, Inspector (Investigations) at Bhaluka Model Police Station, confirmed that the incident caused significant unrest in the area and disrupted traffic on the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway. Law enforcement authorities were deployed to restore order and prevent further violence.
The victim’s father, Ravilal Das, told media that the family first learned about their son’s death through social media. The killing has sparked fear and grief within the local Hindu community and drawn widespread condemnation.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven individuals in connection with the murder. In a statement, the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said the arrests were made following operations by RAB-14 at multiple locations. The suspects, aged between 19 and 46, include Mohammad Limon Sarkar, Mohammad Tarek Hossain, Mohammad Manik Mia, Irshad Ali, Nijum Uddin, Alomgir Hossain, and Mohammad Miraj Hossain Akon.
Authorities have assured that those responsible for the killing will be brought to justice. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over mob violence, religious intolerance, and the need for stronger measures to protect minority communities in Bangladesh.
