The Maharashtra government has decided to increase the working hours for private sector employees. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ government has approved a change in the rules to increase the maximum working hours of employees from 9 to 10 hours. Along with this, there is a plan to gradually increase the limit of working hours to 12 hours. This change will be applicable in private companies.

What will increased working hours mean?
According to this new rule, now private sector employees will have to work for 10 hours instead of 9 hours daily. Gradually it will be increased to 12 hours. Apart from this, rest time will also be available after 6 hours instead of 5 hours. Also, the limit of overtime has also been increased. Earlier this limit was 115 hours per quarter, now it has been increased to 144 hours. However, written consent of the employees will be necessary for overtime.

Employee concerns: Family and mental health
Many young people and working people of Mumbai are worried about this decision. They believe that if the working hours increase so much, they will not be able to give time to their family. Working 12 hours a day is not good for mental health. This can increase stress and can also have a bad effect on the health of the workers. Questions are also being raised about getting overtime money, whether the company will pay it in full or not.

Labor union demanded better allowances
Abhijit Rane, president of Dhadak Kamgar Union, which works for Mumbai’s laborers and employees, has reacted to this decision of the government. He says that if employees have to work for longer hours, then additional allowances and better facilities should also be ensured for them. He said that he will talk to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on this issue so that the interests of the employees can also be taken care of. He also demanded employment security and encouragement of startup companies from the government.
