 You will be surprised to see what he saw. When he was working as the Chief Advisor on Institutions and Capacity Development with the Odisha Government, he was getting a salary of just Rs 1 per year. He said that he has received 8 checks in 8 years and his last check is still special to him. Bagchi said that for him, real wealth is not money, but service to others and contribution to the development of the country.

Sharing his last pay cheque on social media platform X, Bagchi said, “What is the biggest asset in this life that I would never want to give up? When I worked with the government, I took a salary of Rs 1 every year. For the 8 years I spent there, I got 8 cheques and this was my last pay cheque.”

The post has gone viral and many have called it a rare example of true leadership. One user said, “Your contribution to Odisha is unparalleled. You could have earned Rs 8,000 crore in 8 years in the corporate world.” Salute!! Another user said, “You are a great person who cares about your country, not about self-development.” Another user wrote, “The great work you have done cannot be described in words and you are a living example and inspiration to many.”

Bagchi took charge as the chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority in 2016. He was also the chief spokesperson of the Odisha government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Best known as the co-founder of IT services company Mindtree, Bagchi has long been admired for his leadership and philanthropy. Along with his wife, Susmita, he has pledged hundreds of crores towards cancer care, education, and skills initiatives in Odisha.

And yet, despite his corporate success, it is the ₹1 cheque that he calls his most treasured income. It stands as a testament to his belief that public service—done sincerely and selflessly—is its own reward.
