Super Typhoon Ragasa Slams Asia: Dozens Dead, Millions Affected Across Philippines, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong

Super Typhoon Ragasa Slams Asia: Dozens Dead, Millions Affected Across Philippines: Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the strongest storms in recent history, has wreaked havoc across Asia, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The typhoon battered the Philippines and Taiwan first, bringing deadly landslides and flooding. In the Philippines, at least 10 people lost their lives and hundreds of families were displaced. In Taiwan, intense rainfall breached a lake embankment, triggering flash floods that spread into parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, killing 17 people and causing widespread damage. The army has been deployed for rescue and relief operations.

In Hong Kong, Ragasa made landfall on Wednesday, paralyzing daily life. High waves submerged coastal resorts, more than 100 people were injured, and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Food supplies ran low at the airport, and strong winds uprooted trees and tore through buildings. Meanwhile, southern China’s Guangdong province witnessed some of the strongest winds ever recorded—up to 240 km/h—prompting the evacuation of nearly 2 million people. Schools, factories, and transportation services were shut down across multiple cities in anticipation of the storm.

Although Ragasa has now weakened to a Category 3 severe typhoon, experts warn that vulnerable coastal regions remain at risk. Relief efforts are still ongoing in heavily affected areas, even as normal life begins to resume in cities like Hong Kong. The disaster has once again highlighted the growing challenge of disaster preparedness in the face of increasingly powerful storms, driven by changing climate patterns.
