17 Killed in Tragic Bus Accident in Northeastern Brazil
Tragic Bus Accident In Brazil: Bus Crash Kills At Least 17 People: A devastating road accident in northeastern Brazil has claimed the lives of at least 17 people after a passenger bus carrying around 30 passengers overturned. The incident occurred while the bus was en route from Saloá in Pernambuco state to Brumado in Bahia. Authorities say the vehicle struck roadside boulders before hitting a sand dune and overturning. The exact number of injured passengers is still unclear, though all were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police reported that the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to veer into the opposite lane before the fatal impact. While the driver sustained only minor injuries, preliminary reports have not confirmed whether alcohol was a factor. The accident remains under investigation. Bahia Governor Jerónimo Teixeira expressed his condolences on social media and assured that the state is supporting rescue efforts and the identification of victims.
This tragedy adds to a growing list of deadly road accidents in Brazil. According to the Ministry of Transport, more than 10,000 people lost their lives in traffic-related incidents across the country in 2024. Earlier this year, similar fatal crashes included a February collision involving university students and an April bus overturning in the southeast that killed 11, including two children.
