Typhoon Kalmaegi Kills Over 100 in Philippines, Leaves 75 Missing as Floods Devastate Nation
Typhoon Kalmaegi has claimed more than 100 lives and left at least 75 people missing in the Philippines, triggering severe flooding that stranded residents on rooftops and swept away vehicles. The powerful storm struck as the country was still reeling from a recent deadly earthquake, compounding the devastation across multiple provinces. Officials reported that more than 387,000 people were evacuated before the typhoon made landfall, while 186 domestic flights were canceled and ferry operations were suspended for safety.
In a separate tragedy, a Philippine Air Force helicopter crashed in the southern province of Agusan del Sur on Tuesday while en route to deliver relief supplies to storm-hit areas. The aircraft was part of the national effort to provide emergency aid to regions battered by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which brought winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour and torrential rain.
The Philippines, which faces around 20 typhoons annually, is now bracing for further challenges as Kalmaegi moves toward Vietnam and Thailand. Heavy rainfall is expected in central Vietnam, while Thailand’s weather agency has issued warnings for northern, eastern, and central regions. Authorities there have cautioned residents about the risk of flooding and landslides over the coming weekend as the typhoon continues its destructive path across Southeast Asia.
