A recent study suggests that the basis of a healthy relationship may be linked to your partner’s IQ. Evolutionary psychologist Gavin S. Vance and his team at Oakland University in the US said in their research that relationships with men of high cognitive ability are usually more successful, satisfying and less risky.
There is no doubt that intelligence plays an important role in your success at every turn in life, but did you know that it is equally important in romantic relationships? This study, published in the UK’s Personality and Individual Differences journal, assessed 202 men aged 18 to 65. These participants were in a romantic relationship for at least six months and during this time their problem solving skills, logical thinking and general intelligence were measured.
Shocking results found in research
During this time, the research team found surprising things. The team found that the relationships of more intelligent men were also healthier. That is, there was less tendency of fighting, arguing, cunning, cheating or being forced to be physical in their behavior. There was a greater possibility of satisfaction in their relationships and giving priority to the needs of their partner.
Such men had much better self-control. Along with this, their ability to take decisions more thoughtfully was also found to be better. Before doing anything, these people used to think about the impact it might have on their relationship in the future.
Smartness is not just limited to grades
Interestingly, smartness in this study does not mean success at the educational or professional level. This study measured emotional control, the ability to control your emotions and empathize with your partner using logic. If your partner is smart, he or she will solve any problem with patience and understanding. Both these qualities are important for resolving conflict and maintaining a happy relationship. For women who want permanent relationships and love affairs, this study makes it clear that as much as financial stability and career success are important, the intelligence of the partner is equally important in building a strong relationship .
