Dr. Saloni Chadha, Associate Professor in the Department of Gynecology at RML Hospital in Delhi, explains that every woman experiences pain at the beginning of her period. This pain can be both mild and severe, but in some women, the pain can last for several days and is intense. This is because the female body produces the hormone prostaglandin during menstruation. In some women, this hormone is produced in excess. If it is produced in excess, the uterine muscles contract more. This contraction causes the pain to intensify and last for several days.

Dr. Saloni explains that women with fibroids or cysts also experience more pain during their periods. If a woman is under mental stress, which increases her cortisol hormone levels, this can also cause pain.

Dr. Saloni explains that it’s normal to experience severe pain for a day or two during your period, but if it persists for other days and is causing difficulty with any activity, you should consult a doctor. If you experience symptoms such as heavy bleeding, vomiting, fever, or dizziness along with the pain, go to the hospital immediately. Don’t be careless about this.
