The period of Pitru Paksha is considered auspicious for appeasing the ancestors. The last day of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. The festival of Mahalaya is also celebrated on this day. This date is considered special in Sanatan scriptures because on this auspicious day, Goddess Durga departs Mount Kailash to return to earth.
