According to the Panchang, the festival of Radha Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami date of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. Often we hear that whenever the name of Lord Krishna is taken, the name of Radha Rani is definitely taken before that. Devotees always say ‘Radhe-Krishna’, ‘Radha-Krishna’, but never say ‘Krishna-Radha’. According to mythology, there is a deep spiritual belief and amazing mystery hidden behind this.
Shri Krishna is pleased with the name Radha
According to mythological beliefs, chanting Radha’s name pleases Lord Krishna and bestows the infinite blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. The love of Radha-Krishna is not an ordinary love, but it is an uninterrupted flow of charity, which has been flowing in the hearts of devotees for ages. This is the reason why for centuries, the name of Shri Krishna is taken along with Radha.
In the scriptures, Radha Rani is described as the eternal power of Shri Krishna and the presiding goddess of life. It is believed that the worship of Shri Krishna is incomplete without Radha Rani. It is mentioned in Shrimad Devi Bhagwat Purana that if someone does not worship Radha, then he is not entitled to Krishna Bhakti. It is believed that the devotee who takes the name of Radha, Lord Krishna hears his call and removes all the troubles of life.
It is mentioned in the Puranas that Lord Krishna himself had said, ‘Radha is my soul. I live in Radha and Radha lives in me.’ Lord Krishna may not like hearing his name repeatedly, but when a devotee calls out ‘Radha-Radha’, he becomes extremely happy.
Why is Radha Rani’s name taken before Shri Krishna?
According to the mythological tale, Vyasa Muni’s son Shukdev ji had taken the form of a parrot and lived in Radha’s palace and used to chant ‘Radha-Radha’ day and night. One day Radha Rani told him to now chant the name ‘Krishna-Krishna’. Gradually everyone in the city started chanting Krishna’s name. Seeing this, Shri Krishna became very sad. He told Narad ji that he gets pleasure only by hearing the name ‘Radha’. Hearing Krishna say this, Radha’s eyes filled with tears and she told Shukdev ji to chant only ‘Radha-Radha’ from now on . Since then, it became a tradition that Radha’s name is taken before Krishna’s.
