SIR Controversy Takes Center Stage as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Resume Winter Sitting

Winter Session Begins Today: Opposition Warns of Parliament Disruption Over SIR Issue: The winter session of Parliament begins today and is expected to be turbulent, with the Opposition gearing up to corner the Central government on several key issues, particularly the SIR (State Identification Register). Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are likely to witness heated exchanges as the ruling party has prepared its strategy, while the Opposition has warned of strong protests.

During the all-party meeting held on Sunday, the Opposition made it clear that if the SIR issue is not taken up for discussion, they will force an adjournment of Parliament. Leaders from 36 political parties—more than 50 representatives—attended the meeting, which was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Opposition parties have also demanded discussions on several other issues, including the Delhi bomb blasts, national security, air pollution, and foreign policy. They argued that these concerns are of national importance and require immediate parliamentary attention.

On the other hand, the Central government has appealed to the Opposition for cooperation to ensure the smooth functioning of the House. Meanwhile, the government has proposed marking the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ in the Rajya Sabha as part of the Business Advisory Committee agenda.

Following its loss in the Bihar elections, the Opposition sees the winter session as an opportunity to regain political ground. The SIR issue is particularly significant for parties like the Congress, TMC, DMK, and CPI, as elections are scheduled next year in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. They allege that the ruling party could manipulate the voter list using the SIR, making it a politically sensitive topic for upcoming state elections.

With both sides firm on their positions, the winter session is expected to be tense and politically charged.
