The 36 year old scored 3990 runs in 149 matches for australia in ODIs . he will remain available for t20i selection .
The explosive batter and often underestimated off-spin bowler played 149 ODI matches for Australia including what is regarded by many the greatest one-day innings of all-time.
Retiring before the 2027 ODI World Cup is being viewed as a significant setback for Kangaroo fans and players. However, he will continue to play first-class cricket, in addition to the T20 format. Before him, David Warner also retired from ODIs. He has announced his retirement himself.
Maxwell came in against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup with his side reeling at 7-91. In a high-pressure situation and battling severe cramps in searing heat, he smashed 201 off just 128 balls to snatch victory from jaws of defeat. Australia went on to win the World Cup, beating favourites India in Ahmedabad.

I told George Bailey that I don’t think I will be able to play till 2027. Maxwell said that now is the time to prepare others to take his place. He further said that I think it is time to give people a chance in my place.
Maxwell had decided to retire from ODIs even before his finger injury in the IPL. Before him, Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith have also retired from ODIs. He further said that the physical demands of the 50-over game were very high. He said, ‘My decision to retire from ODI cricket came after the first few matches of the Champions Trophy.’
