Earthquake tremors in South America, magnitude 7.1

A series of powerful earthquakes have struck both remote and populated regions across the globe, raising concerns among seismologists and prompting tsunami warnings in several coastal areas.

Drake Passage Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Drake Passage, the narrow body of water between Cape Horn in South America and Antarctica. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter of the quake was located just 10 kilometers beneath the ocean floor, increasing the potential for tsunami activity.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center responded swiftly, issuing a tsunami alert with Chile identified as a region at risk. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay away from beaches. Fishermen have also been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until the threat subsides. No casualties have yet been reported in connection with this seismic event.

Deadly Twin Earthquakes Strike Southern Philippines

Meanwhile, in the southern Philippines, a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck on Friday morning, killing at least seven people. The powerful quake caused landslides, damaged hospitals and schools, and led to the temporary evacuation of coastal communities due to an initial tsunami threat, which was later withdrawn.

Just hours later, the region was shaken again by a second earthquake, this time registering at a magnitude of 6.8. According to Teresito Bacolcol, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the tremors were strongly felt in Manay City, located in Davao Oriental province. The quake originated from a depth of 37 kilometers within the Philippine Trench, a known seismic hotspot.

Authorities continue to assess the damage in the region, and disaster response teams are actively involved in rescue and relief operations.

With multiple high-magnitude earthquakes occurring within a short time span, seismologists are closely monitoring global tectonic activity. Citizens in vulnerable regions are being urged to stay alert and follow all safety advisories issued by local and national authorities.
