Air India plane crash: Who is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani?

A horrific plane crash took place in Meghnani Nagar, Ahmedabad, on Thursday afternoon. Air India flight number- AI-171 crashed immediately after takeoff. After the plane from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed, Air India said that 169 Indians, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian citizen were travelling in this plane. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was also on board this plane.

Former Gujarat CM and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Rupani passed away at the age of 68. Rupani, who served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021, has had a long-standing political career. Before becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Rupani was a Rajya Sabha member between July 2006 and 2012. In 2014, Narendra Modi resigned as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and was elected as the Prime Minister of the country. Anandiben Patel replaced him in Gujarat. About two years later, in August 2016, Vijay Rupani became the Chief Minister of the state in place of Anandiben Patel.

The BJP fought the 2017 assembly elections on the face of Rupani and returned to power once again by winning. After winning the assembly elections, Vijay Rupani took oath as the Chief Minister of the state for the second time. In his two terms, he held this post for a total of five years and 37 days.

In his first term as Chief Minister, Rupani held the post of CM from August 2016 to December 2017. After this, he took over the post of Chief Minister between December 2017 and September 2021. Rupani, who was the Chief Minister for five years and 37 days, also served as Gujarat State BJP President between February and August 2016. Earlier in the year 1996-97, Rupani was also the Mayor of Rajkot Municipal Corporation.

He was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) worker.
Also joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).
First, he was a member of the Jan Sangh and later of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Rupani also went to jail during the Emergency in 1976.
Born in Burma, the family came to Gujarat 65 years ago
Rupani was born in Burma (today’s Myanmar). Due to political instability here, the family came to Rajkot, Gujarat in 1960. Rupani completed his studies in Gujarat. He also obtained a law degree.
In the year 1977, Dharmendrasinghji took a BA degree from AC College.
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from AMP Law College under Saurashtra University in the year 1980.

Air India was started in 1932 by entrepreneur JRD Tata. In 1953, the Government of India acquired it. In 2022, the airline’s operations were taken over again in a deal worth $2.2 billion. Now, after the Ahmedabad accident, the airline’s reputation has suffered a major setback.
