PM Modi congratulates Sushilla Karki: Says it is an example of women’s empowerment

PM Modi Congratulates Sushila Karki, Nepal’s First Woman PM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki on becoming the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, calling it a shining example of women’s empowerment. Speaking at a rally in Imphal, Modi highlighted the deep-rooted ties between India and Nepal, based on shared history, culture, and faith. He expressed confidence that Karki’s leadership would bring peace, stability, and development to the neighboring nation, saying, “On behalf of 140 crore Indians, I congratulate Karki.”

Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal, took the oath on Friday night as the country’s first female interim Prime Minister. Her appointment follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli after massive youth-led protests against a controversial social media ban rocked the nation. The interim leadership was formed following consultations between President Ram Chandra Paudel, senior army officials, and leaders of the protest movement, with the aim of restoring political order and democratic functioning.

Praising the resilience and spirit of the Nepali people, PM Modi commended citizens for maintaining democratic values and civic responsibility during turbulent times, even noting their efforts in cleaning and painting public spaces amid unrest. He reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Nepal, stating that New Delhi stands firmly with the country in its democratic journey and will continue to walk alongside it toward peace and progress.
